Now close your eyes and picture this: a room infused in a blended aroma of essential oils and scented candles as you’re soaking in a bubble-filled bath and a soothing face mask. Just imagining a self-care day for myself is already quite relaxing. But in this post, I’ll be walking you through my prep and ritual for the most restful DIY spa day at home.
I like to prepare my spa day in stages BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER.
BEFORE you get into your bath and let your worries fade, you have to prepare for the experience.
The first thing to do is declutter your space. Cleaning out your physical space is the first step to clearing your mind. Then we set the scene. Dim your warm-toned lights and start an essential oil diffuser to set the mood. You can also opt to use scented candles in place of the diffused lights and diffuser. Simply doing all this already makes a world of difference in making the place cozier. But if you want to fully embrace the spa ambiance, you can also play some calm spa music (Spotify has some great Spa Day playlists) for a more immersive atmosphere.
This is also the time to start filling up your bathtub and bring out all the masks, scrubs, and skincare you’ll be using. Prepare a stack of fluffy towels and your favorite soft robe ready to be used.
Before getting in the bath, I use a face steamer. This helps open up my skin to make sure it can absorb all the products I’ll be using. I also take this time to lather my hair with a hydrating hair mask to keep my locks nourished while I relax in the tub.
Once my bath is filled, I throw in my choice of a bath bomb and I keep some Epsom salt nearby as it helps soothe the muscle.
I recommend keeping your favorite healthy snacks and drinks at arms-length and stocked up as your spa treats.
Now DURING the experience, your top priority is to relax. We prepare ahead of time so that this time is only for us. At this point, I’m fully masked up: hair mask, face mask, and eye mask. If I’m feeling a little extra that day, I love adding some rose petals in the tub for a more luxurious experience.
I find that having all these elements present really helps me stay in the moment and not let my mind wander. There’s really nothing else to do but enjoy the time you’ve carved for yourself and the space you’ve curated.
Once I’m almost ready to get out of the tub, I do a good scrub—nothing like the freshness of freshly scrubbed skin. The easier option is using an exfoliating body scrub but there are some days where I prefer using a dry brush. Each has its benefits but both are equally as refreshing.
While the main event was bath time, the AFTER care is also instrumental. As you get out of the tub, slip into the fluffiest robe you have and start with your skincare.
With all your dead skin scrubbed, it’s good to apply a hydrating lotion. I also use a toner, serum, and moisturizer for my face. Then I give my face a good massage with a Gua sha or face roller. These help promote some lift in the skin which spent the last hour soaked in a tub. I sometimes would also put some muscle relief patches or balms If I’m feeling extra sore that day.
